Ovarian Masses & Cysts

Ovarian masses and cysts can occur in children and adolescents, often requiring specialized diagnosis and treatment. At Austin Pediatric Surgery, our team is trained to provide expert care specialized for pediatric gynecological issues, using advanced diagnostic tools and minimally invasive surgical techniques to ensure the best outcomes for your child.

What are Ovarian Masses and Cysts?

  • Ovarian Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs that form on or within an ovary. Most are benign and resolve on their own, but some may require surgical intervention.

  • Ovarian Masses: Abnormal growths in or around the ovaries, which may be benign or, in rare cases, malignant.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain or bloating

  • Changes in menstrual patterns

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Feeling of fullness or pressure in the abdomen

If your child exhibits any of these symptoms, contact your pediatrician or a specialist for evaluation.

Diagnosis

  • Ultrasound: The primary tool for identifying ovarian cysts or masses.

  • MRI or CT: Used when detailed anatomical information is needed.

  • Blood Tests: May be conducted to evaluate for hormonal imbalances or tumor markers.

Treatment Options
Depending on the nature of the ovarian mass your surgeon will work with you to create an appropriate surgical plan using minimally invasive techniques, when possible, with the priority of treating the disease and preserving future fertility.
